SUCCESS Magazine List of 27 Best Resources

NEW SURVEY RESULTS:

One in Three Americans Want to Own Their Own Business

Also:  SUCCESS Magazine Names 27 Resources to Achieve Success

New York,

NY

(July 1, 2008) – A new survey conducted by SUCCESS magazine, the preeminent publication for personal achievement, found that 33 percent of Americans say that their top goal in life is to run their own company. Coming in a close second, 31 percent stated that their top goal is to retire early. These were followed by raising a family (16 percent), purchase a dream house and get in shape (both 10 percent).

The uncertain economy, coupled with across the board layoffs and job cuts, may have contributed to this strong desire from respondents to open their own businesses – and have more control over their financial futures.

In a subsequent survey, which generated 1,200 responses, nearly 20 percent of Americans responded that they lack life goals.

“We were surprised to find that nearly one in five Americans answered ‘No’ when asked if they had life goals,” said Darren Hardy, publisher and editorial director of SUCCESS. “This sentiment encouraged us to create our list of 27 resources that could help get people on the path to success. The No. 1 resource—a personal list of life goals.”

The Life Goals survey was conducted to coincide with the SUCCESS feature on the “27 Resources for Your Success,” a list of essential tools and technologies to help achievers gain the competitive edge. The 27 resources include:

  • Mentor/Coach—those who seek excellence have a coach. Even Tiger Woods, who has written books on how to master you golf swing, has a swing coach.

  • Personal Reading/Listening Library—being a consummate student can be the single greatest factor contributing to your success.

  • News Aggregator/Reader (RSS)—Sites like iGoogle and Bloglines.com allow you to create personalized news feeds so you can stay current on happenings in the world.

  • On-site or Virtual Assistant—when growing a business your time is too valuable to get bogged down with lesser-skill functions, so get a part-time or virtual assistant through AssistU.com.

The SUCCESS magazine surveys were conducted on SUCCESS.com among a national sample of 2,834 and 1,200 Americans, respectively. The margins of error are +/- 1.84 percent and +/- 2.83 percent, respectively, at a 95 percent confidence level.

Executive Coaching Firm That Won an Ad in Times Square Changes Name

Bellevue, WA—People Performance Solutions (PPS), a Bellevue, Washington, based executive coaching and employee-assessment firm, has changed its name to HumanPoint.

The company received national recognition earlier this year by winning the Dell Computers Small Business Award. The company’s founder, Amy Hedin, had her face, philosophy and phone number projected three stories high on New York’s Reuters building in Times Square.

The positive publicity granted Hedin pushed up her Google rankings, spurring a much larger firm to request she change her company’s name because of perceived similarities between their two names.

Hedin considered it and realized it was a chance to relaunch her company with a new name that capitalized on her strengths.

“We felt we needed to rebrand to better market ourselves in the national marketplace,” Hedin says. “Our new name better reflects our work in the human side or human point of business.”

A dynamic speaker, coach, consultant and trainer, Hedin founded her firm in February after working for one of the world’s largest and most recognized training organizations. She has been ranked as one of the top consultants and trainers in the world.

With HumanPoint, Hedin is able to take a more personalized approach to executive coaching, employee assessments and employee engagement. She’s dedicated to working with companies and executives to improve performance and maximize potential.

By partnering with assessment company Profiles International, Hedin can readily diagnose root problems and address them point by point, instead of having companies throw training dollars at all corners of an organization.

“Company leaders are busier than ever,” Hedin points out. “They can’t be wasting time and money on things that don’t work. Our company focuses on cutting to the heart of what’s going on and getting them the results they need…fast.”

Hedin works with CEOs and other corporate decision-makers to address areas where real improvement is needed, whether it’s in leadership competencies, communication training or delegation. Then she helps empower them to make lasting changes.

She delivers the same kind of hands-on employee development advice in her HumanPoint Monthly newsletter Top Talent Trends. She also blogs about the challenges and rewards of helping clients thrive in today’s competitive marketplace at on her blog http://www.amyhedin.com

A Twist to New Year's Resolutions

It is the time of year that most of us start writing down what we are going to start doing in the new year.  You know, the typical list:  diet, exercize, walk the dog, and so forth.  I think we all need to stop doing this effective immediately.

It is better to focus on what we will STOP doing versus START doing because starting something requires more effort than stopping something--but yields the greatest results.

Some of the things I am going to stop doing in 2008:

1.I will stop putting up with lousy service.  As a result of this decision, my hair salon and bank are going to be replaced in the new year.

2. I will stop making excuses about exercize.  To help me do this, I have hired an accountabilty partner to keep my butt (no pun intended) in the gym at least 3 days per week.

3. I will stop using the past as a gauge for the future.  Specifically, just becuase my business did $X in 2007 does not mean we are going to do slightly better than $X in 2008.  The truth is, we should shoot for a much higher number and stop limiting our projections based only on last years numbers.

4.  I will stop worrying about things I cannot control.  It was even hard for me to type that sentence becuase I am worried that I won't be able to live up to this.  Ugh!

5.  I will stop allowing the entire week to go by in a blur with no recollection of what happened.  Instead, I will schedule fun lunches and dinners with friends and family and celebrate my successes.

What are some of the things you will stop doing in 2008.  Add this list to your blog and I will post your comments so we can get this list to 100 or even 1000.

Happy New Year!

6. Betsey S says:  I will stop "doing" everything at one point in every day just to be grateful.

7. Darcy J says:  I will stop worrying about what people think!

8. Darcy J says:  I will use my words impeccably - ask for exactly what I want and not use words to speak poorly of other people.

9. Heather says: I will be honest with myself and others about my feelings no matter how hard it is or how uncomfortable it makes me (instead of holding it all in...it doesn't just go away).

10. Heather says:  Don't let others actions determine my success or happiness.  I am my own person.

11. Krista says:  I will start setting more boundaries with work so that I can spend more quality time with my family.  Ten years from now, my employer won't remember my sacrifices, but my husband and children will.

12. Linda says: I will try and think outside the box more, looking for creative solutions.

13.  MaryAnn says:  I will get back on track with a healthy diet and use that to increase my stamina and focus.

14. Jayna Butler says:  I will become an entrepreneur and promote the business.  God has put this into me, but I have yet to fully discover what He wants me to do with this thing.  So I know it is a matter of time before I do.  Jayna lists more of her resolutions on her blog.

SUCCESS Magazine Tips

Dallas, Texas (December 21, 2008) – New Year’s is a time for resolutions, and according to SUCCESS  there is no better time design the person you want to become and the life you want to live in 2008. Publisher and Editorial Director of SUCCESS magazine, Darren Hardy, offers the following advice on how to make 2008 your best year ever!

1.      Decide to be Successful – Success is not a dream, hope or fantasy; it is a decision.  Make the decision to change, improve and act on your ambitions.

2.      Design your Best Year Yet – As an architect would design a skyscraper, write out the goals, plans and actions it will take to achieve the life you want to live.

3.      Identify Your Passion - What are your unique interests, talents and gifts?  Passion attracts success. Find what you love to do - you will never “work” again.

4.      Program Yourself for Success – You will see, perceive, expect and create what you think about. To program your mind for success – read watch and listen to materials that will support your success.

5.      Surround Yourself with Success - You are the combined average of the five people you hang around the most. Surround yourself with healthy, success-minded achievers.

6.      Model Success - The best way to learn to be successful at anything is to find someone who is where you want to be and model their success habits.

7.      Master the Fundamentals – Don’t complicate it. About a half a dozen things make up 90%+ of what it takes to be successful at anything. Keep it simple.

8.      Get Fit - The mind cannot achieve what the body cannot perform.  Your family, friends and career and future depend on your good health. Make it priority No. 1.

9.      Remember What’s Important – At the end of the journey what will have mattered most will be your relationships – the people you love and those that love you. Make sure they are on your goal list for 2008.

10.  Make a Difference – What do you want your life’s legacy to be? You have the power to make a positive difference – to a single person, a neighborhood, a community, a nation, the world. Realize that power in 2008.

Season of Giving

Today I received an email from a major retailer and at the bottom of the email it had a box that said, "We Support St. Jude" and had a link to their website to donate.  What a terrific way to help a great cause and also show their customers that they give back to their community.  I also received an email this week from a colleague Jeff Collins saying that he is raising money for Muscular Dystrophy and if I don't already have a charity I am supporting this holiday season could I please add his link to my blog.

Here you go Jeff:  Click here to visit my Participant Page.

Even though I have a three charity's I support during the holidays and throughout the year I want to do everything I can to get the word out to others about giving.  This is a year that many people will be doing without when there is such an abundance of resources out there.  The truth is, there is not a lack of resources--there is just a lack in linking the resources to the need.  My life dream is to see some genius create a system for linking the average donor to the actual source of need.  Let's all find creative ways to help---leveraging what we already have at our disposal to help those less fortunate.  By doing so we can truly make the holidays a season of giving.

Evening Magazine with John Curley

On November 2nd I had the opportunity to host Evening Magazine with John Curley.  John is very funny and unpredictable and made it very interesting to do the show.  I also learned that he only does 1 take as you can tell from the first scene.  Unfortunately, his crew did not warn me of this until after we started.
